We Have a Winner...

Congratulations to Eric Sorensen. He answered all ten questions quickly and correctly, and walks off with the Hundred Guineas Cap. E-mail me your choice of color and style, Eric, and we'll send the prize early next week. And runners up, be advised: there might just be another of these contests....

Pop Quiz

Here it is: A pop quiz. You'll find all of the answers scattered about in WB No. 190—the new one, with the high-efficiency Kiwi power cruiser on the cover. The first person to get them all wins a WoodenBoat cap of their choice of style and color—unless nobody gets all of the answers within a week. In that case, the cap will go to the person who answers the most questions correctly. If nobody gets any answers correct, an unlikely event, I'm keeping the cap.

1) How much fuel does the Consolidated Playboat MEMORY burn at full speed?

2) How much fuel does the New Zealand cruising launch WHIO burn at cruising speed?

3) What words did the dying Thomas Fleming Day whisper to a friend?

4) What was the thickness of the deck planking of the racing scow Outlook?

5) What are the two principal methods of traditional planking?

6) Which boat won the first Bermuda Race?

7) What are the dates and location of the John Gardner Small Craft Weekend?

8) Who designed the Triangle-class sloop?

9) In what year was the cabin-class sloop CHEWINK launched?

10) What were the names of the two original Knockabout sloops at Marblehead, Massachusetts?

RULES UPDATE: Answers must appear in "Comments," below, to be valid. Don't e-mail them.

ALSO: One astute observer beat us to an error in WB No. 190. Look for the answer to question No. 6 in the article's main text, not in the captions.

Whole Lotta Lurkin' Goin' On

The RudderPosts research department reports that there are a fair number of repeat visitors to this site--as well as a number who stumble onto it from far-flung places.

Research also reveals that you're a quiet lot, preferring to sit in the back of the room and listen, and to not speak until called upon. So be warned: There's a pop quiz coming up in the next post. You are advised to study your new issue of WoodenBoat--No. 190. At stake is a coveted WoodenBoat cap. The Hundred Guineas Cap, we call it.

Movie Review

Do me a favor, would you? Scroll down to the post below called Raid Sweden: The Movie, click the link at the bottom of the page, and  watch the movie--or try to. It's a pretty cool scene, these little open Swedish pilot boats screaming along in 25 knots of breeze. But I suspect the load time was too long for most people. We'd like to post more moving images here, but might have to fine tune our protocols a bit to do that.

So, give it a try, and describe your experience with it in the comments. (We're not looking for a critical evaluation of the cinematography or sailhandling. You can mention these if you want to, but what we're really after is your opinion on the load time and general quality.)

RudderPosts Survey: Memorable Covers

Which cover of WoodenBoat is most memorable, and why? Don't bother looking up the issue number or date; just describe the image.

I'd ask which image you find least memorable, too, but that question has a built-in problem (the obvious answer being "I can't remember"). If, however, there are any covers you recall not particularly liking, what are they?
